When US President Felonious Punk ‘paused’ support for Ukraine Tuesday morning, a number of media outlets worried that the lack of US support puts Ukraine in a no-win situation. In the wake of last Friday’s disgraceful encounter with a pompous Punk and spoiled VP Fuxacouch, UK’s Starmer and France’s Macron were quick to condemn the US attack on an ally and promised that the rest of Europe would come to Ukraine’s aid.
While US military aid is helpful, Ukraine and Europe stand to benefit long-term from shunning the US rather than the effort at appeasement that seems to be taking place. Europe has already provided more than twice the amount of financial assistance that the US has paid. By continuing strong support, even bringing Ukraine into the NATO fold, Europe stands to make itself stronger and more able to confront and stop Russia from furthering its attempted conquests.
Sure, the operation is complicated and fraught with challenges, but depending on a deceptive and untrustworthy ally like the US puts both Ukraine and all of Europe in more danger. Standing up to a bully like Punk is always difficult. His tariffs threaten the economic stability of the entire world. The longer he is allowed to push around other nations, he’s going to take advantage of that power and use it for pure evil.
The first thing that has to happen is fixing the funding problem. While the EU has already given quite a bit, it needs to up its donations both as a group and through the efforts of individual countries. While it takes a hot minute to get such funding through the various legislatures, the effort is being made and will likely be available by the end of the month. The possibility of turning over frozen Russian assets to Ukraine is being discussed as well and those funds would largely replace what President Punk has put on hold. The combination of those efforts would immediately put Ukraine in a stronger financial position. Worst case scenario, the International Monetary Fund and World Bank could help, though their ‘help’ often comes with conditions that could weaken Ukraine’s long-term options.
The next thing that has to happen is replacing the military support. NATO and the EU need to work on this even if Ukraine doesn’t need their help. The US is proving to be the worst and most unreliable type of ally. We’ve never been a country to really have Europe’s back. In both WWI and WWII, the US waited, allowing huge chunks of Europe to be decimated by war before entering the fray. Putting any faith in the US at this moment in time is a foolish choice that could, once again, lead to Europe being overrun by tyrants.
Instead, Europe betters itself and Ukraine by pooling its resources and jointly building out a military infrastructure that could, and should, exceed that of the US. They’ve already been sharing intelligence resources. What should happen next is increased manufacturing, providing military equipment and training, and for Pete’s sake please bolster defenses at NATO’s eastern flank so that Russia will think two or three times before attempting to spread its tyranny any further.
Yes, the talks that are underway to extend bilateral security agreements with individual nations is a good move, but allowing Ukraine to join NATO, even over US objection, is the stronger decision. Bringing Ukraine into the European Defense Fund would also give the battle-worn country more access to the weapons and armament that it needs.
The big question is whether Europe is willing to unite behind such a cause. Nationalistic emotions have been strong across the continent for well over 200 years now. Many of their modern military traditions are built on the concept of each country taking care of itself. WWII showed how foolish that philosophy is as nation after nation fell to the power of another cruel and evil dictator. Europe needs to bolster its political interconnectivity as much as it needs to help Ukraine. Only then can they begin building a military complex capable of defending them all from Russia, China, and yes, the United States. The US simply cannot be trusted as an ally and Europe has already been burned (literally) twice by misplacing their trust in our country. They need a long-term strategy that provides for US involvement if it’s there, but cruises along to victory just as well even if we’re absent.
Make no mistake about it, the US is currently a disingenuous and disgusting ally. In fact, it’s a bit of a stretch to consider us as anyone’s ally at all. Punk’s ‘America First’ campaign refuses to acknowledge the interconnectivity of the modern world. Any agreements that have been in place in the past are no longer reliable. This president is a proven liar and con man.
While many of us in the US still strongly support Ukraine and its continued battle for safety and independence from Russia, our own President stands in the way of being the ally that Ukraine and all of Europe need. So, while we work to take down the president, Europe has little choice but to unite as a single power and flex muscles it’s forgotten it has.
