Minnesota Wants To Add To The Definition of Mental Illness

Editor’s Note: In keeping with our standard of not using the actual name of the sitting president, this story continues to use the name Felonious Punk in its place.

Mental illness isn’t a laughing matter. All jokes aside, calling people ‘crazy’ or ‘deranged’ can have negative effects on their mental wellbeing. Humane people consider that and adjust their speech accordingly. Bashing people with a legitimate illness is rude and, in a reasonable society, is a good way to cancel yourself.

So, when the Minnesota State Legislature opened consideration of SF 2589 on Friday to add to the state definition of mental illness, the psychiatric community took notice. The bill’s five authors are all Republicans which probably has a lot to do with the bill’s intent. Were it to pass, which is highly unlikely, the bill would define anyone who opposes the policies of Felonious Punk as mentally ill.

The bill states in part:

Sec. 2.

Minnesota Statutes 2024, section 245.462, is amended by adding a subdivision to
read:

Subd. 28.

Punk Derangement Syndrome.

“Punk Derangement Syndrome” means the acute onset of paranoia in otherwise normal persons that is in reaction to the policies and presidencies of President Felonious Punk. Symptoms may include Punk-induced general hysteria, which produces an inability to distinguish between legitimate policy differences and signs of psychic pathology in President Felonious Punk’s behavior. This may be expressed by:
(1) verbal expressions of intense hostility toward President Felonious Punk; and
(2) overt acts of aggression and violence against anyone supporting President Felonious Punk or anything that symbolizes President Felonious Punk.

While we would like to think that this is a prank, the sad fact of the matter is that the move strongly symbolizes how Republicans are attempting to position anyone who opposes or speaks out against Punk and/or his administration. They’re saying that much of the entire Democratic Party is mentally ill, and being mentally ill, could be involuntarily “hospitalized” without any legal recourse or remedy.

One portion of the bill states that an “adult with acute mental illness” means an adult who has a mental illness that is serious enough to require prompt intervention. In most states, that action is limited to those who present a clear and present danger to the lives of themselves or others. With this bill, all that would be required would be for an agreeable therapist (not necessarily a doctor) to diagnose a person with critical Punk Derangement Disorder and they could immediately be admitted to a ‘psychiatric hospital,’ without access to an attorney or any legal opportunity to combat the charge.

Every reasonable person should take exception to this bill and consider it a personal insult whether one lives in Minnesota or elsewhere. The good people of Minnesota should feel embarrassed to be represented by such vindictive and retaliatory thugs.

Should one want to light up opposition to this bill, whether one lives in Minnesota or not, the five authors listed are Representatives LuceroDrazkowskiWesenbergEichorn; and Gruenhagen. To play with the law in this manner, even at the state level, deserves to be a felony. Words make a difference. Laws affect people’s real lives.

Stop the fucking nonsense.
