Corey Booker Stands Up

As of 8:00 AM EDT, Senator Corey Booker of New Jersey is holding the floor of the Senate in a continual barrage of complaints about President Felonious Punk, DOGE, the Muskrat, and other members of the administration. He’s been talking non-stop since just after 8:00 PM last night. In announcing his intentions, he said, “I’m heading to the Senate floor because [Felonious Punk] and Elroy Muskrat have shown a complete disregard for the rule of law, the Constitution, and the needs of the American people. I am not going to stop speaking, I am not going to stop standing,” he said. “I am going to go for as long as I’m physically able to go.”

So far, the senator has barely paused to take a breath. This speech is the kind of action that Democrats across the nation have been urging their elected officials to take. While the nomination that Sen. Booker is holding up is politically small potatoes, his willingness to stand up against Punk and Muskrat directly is something we’ve not seen from anyone in the legislature. Sure, Bernie and AOC have had their rallies, but those are held well away from DC and do not interrupt the flow of business in Congress. This takes guts and no small amount of fortitude.

“I rise with the intention of disrupting the normal business of the United States Senate for as long as I am physically able,” Sen. Booker said near the start of his speech. “I rise tonight because I believe sincerely that our nation is in crisis.”

“In just 71 days, the president of the United States has inflicted so much harm on Americans’ safety, financial stability, the core foundations of our democracy and even our aspirations as a people for — from our highest offices — a sense of common decency,” Sen. Booker said. “These are not normal times in America, and they should not be treated as such.”

How long can he go? As long as he can remain standing and keep talking. There have been 48 all-night sessions in the Senate. The longest was in 1960 and went for over 125 hours. Sen. Booker is known as one of the more athletic members of the Senate. His Instagram feed is full of videos that feature him speaking while he’s out for a run. While there’s been no mention of any attempt to break the record, Sen. Booker is likely to keep going until he can’t be ignored.

So far, neither Punk nor Muskrat has responded in any public way.

Sen. Booker has been reading messages from constituents all over the country that describe how difficult the White House policies have made their lives. From people who lost their federal jobs to those who have had surgeries postponed or canceled, the senator is making a point of highlighting how painful and dangerous the cuts and the tariffs have made everyday lives.

This comes as President Punk has said, “I couldn’t care less” about prices rising as the result of his tariffs on the car industry. That callousness shows complete disrespect for average Americans and the degree of disconnect between this White House and the rest of the country. Punk has set his agenda and intends to pursue it without any regard as to who might get hurt along the way.

While Congress does have the power to intervene in many places, the partisan divide has made it unlikely for any action at all to ever reach the floor for a vote. Sen. Booker’s speech will need to go on well past 24 hours before the hard-headed GOP members of Congress begin to pay attention, and even then, it is unlikely that the speech will alter the course of business.

Still, the senator is showing that someone is willing to take a stand on behalf of the American people. This is something that, in theory, all members of Congress should be willing to do. Yet, rarely do we see any of them taking such an extreme position.

We’ll keep watching and update this story with any reaction from the White House.
